Answers
1. Icon of the Seas
Icon of the Seas was launched in 2024 and is currently the largest cruise ship in the world.
Her gross tonnage is over 248,663 GT, more than the other ships that were also part of Royal Caribbean’s fleet.
To get a more comprehensive idea about these ships, I recommend you see the list of all Royal Caribbean ships from best to worst.
2. The first humanoid bartender at sea
MSC Virtuosa, a new ship by MSC Cruises, features Rob, the first humanoid bartender at sea.
He prepares very particular cocktails inspired by space, and he’s able to interact with people thanks to his movements and facial expressions.
3. 20 knots
If you chose 20 knots, then you’re right. Most cruise ships travel at an average speed that is around 23 miles per hour (37 km/h).
For obvious reasons, the speed decreases when the ship approaches the coast and increases when it is in the open sea.
The speed is chosen by the ship’s captain, who has a great deal of responsibility in these choices, which is why his salary is generally quite high.
4. Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral is the busiest cruise port by passenger numbers. It surpassed Port Miami in 2022.
Both, however, are still two ports of international relevance for cruises.
5. Bananas
Bananas are considered unlucky to bring on a ship. This is due to a nautical superstition from the 1700s.
At that time, it was common to see bananas floating around sea wrecks, and some sailors began to believe that this fruit sank the ships.
Obviously, it was a silly rumor, but this superstition has been passed down for many years and still persists.
6. Viking Ocean Cruises
Several companies have itineraries around the world, but the one that offers the Ultimate World Cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises.
It’s quite a long trip, it lasts 245 days and allows you to see 59 different countries.
7. Castaway Cay
Although all the options were lovely and referred to Disney, the correct answer is Castaway Cay.
An interesting thing to know is that it was the first private island to allow direct docking of the ship.
Before that, the other private islands required the use of tenders.
8. Holland America Line
All ships in the Holland America Line fleet have names ending with ‘dam’.
Have you noticed it? Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam, Koningsdam and so on!
9. Prinzessin Victoria Luise
The Prinzessin Victoria Luise was the first official cruise ship to set sail in 1900.
It was a German ship owned by the shipping company Hamburg America Line. After five years, the ship sank after an accident near Plumb Point, Jamaica.
10. The World
The World is a cruise ship that offers permanent residency to its guests. Apartments can be bought or rented, and of course, they are very expensive!
11. Miami
Miami has traditionally been known as the “Cruise Capital of the World”.
As we saw before, Port Canaveral has recently challenged this title but Port Miami is still extremely important for cruise ships, with millions of passengers passing through each year.
12. Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean features ice skating rinks on several of its ships. You can find them in the Voyager, Freedom and Oasis classes.
13. Regal Princess
Princess Cruises hosted the largest group vow renewal ceremony with 1,443 couples.
The main ship was Regal Princess but it actually was a multi-location vow renewal with also Royal Princess and Crown Princess involved.
14. MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises’ ships are known for their real crystal staircases.
I am sure you have certainly seen them if you have been on one of their ships.
These stairs are located right in the central heart of the ships, and it is said that each step costs around $13,000.
15. Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line offers the “Freestyle Cruising” concept, allowing guests more flexibility in dining and activities.
We already talked about that when we saw what are the best cruise lines to work for. As we have seen, the concept of freestyle is appealing to both passengers and crew members.
