Fires are a real problem on cruise ships, and they are perhaps the biggest risk with this type of travel.
Fortunately, modern safety measures have made fires less frequent and less severe than in the past.
However, it still happens to hear news reports about fires breaking out on board. Due mostly to the malfunction of mechanical parts or electronic devices.
Unfortunately, a recent fire on a cruise ship injured 3 crew members who reportedly inhaled a lot of smoke.
The fire on the 85,000-ton cruise ship
The ship, which is known as Adora Mediterranea, was docked in Jeju, South Korea.
It can accommodate about 3,000 people and makes an itinerary that starts in China and stops at several locations in South Korea and Japan.
The ship was first built for Costa Cruises in 2003 and was sold to a Chinese company in 2018.
The causes of the fire
According to initial reports, the fire was caused by a malfunction of the air conditioning system.
The Coast Guard received a report at 8:37 a.m. saying that there was smoke rising from the ship.
Passengers on board were immediately evacuated, and fortunately many were already ashore to visit the island.
According to the reconstruction, the sprinkler system worked perfectly as it activated and contained the fire.
The damage was confined to about 50 square meters of the machine room, and after an inspection, the ship was declared fit to sail.
However, the itinerary had to be modified, as the stop in Fukuoka, Japan had to be skipped.
Passengers received an official note in their rooms that said:
We are very sorry to inform you that today the air conditioning compressor failed during the stopover of the Mediterranea in Jeju, South Korea.
The undergoing maintenance will have an impact on the upcoming itinerary of this ship.
The port of Fukuoka was cancelled and RMB 400 was compensated to each passenger.
The three injured people
At present, the balance of this fire is not serious. There are 3 crew members injured, mainly from inhaling smoke trying to extinguish the fire.
Once again this was made possible by the excellent security measures provided by the cruise ships.
That’s why I always advise passengers to read the article on what to do in case of fire on a cruise ship.
Although they are rare, being prepared for these eventualities is always crucial and can save your life.
