Hello, fellow cruisers! I’ve been reading some comments here and there about cruise ship casinos, and I realized there’s a lot of misinformation out there.
Some people have managed to score a free cruise by playing in the casino, but how exactly do you make that happen?
A lot of folks think it comes down to winning big, but that’s not always the case. In fact, there are several different ways to get a free cruise, and in this article, we’ll cover the easiest methods you can try yourself.
Win a turnment
One of the most common methods, and probably the one everyone knows about, is winning a tournament while you’re on board.
Many cruise lines organize tournaments, and the top prize is usually a free cruise along with some cash.
Most often, these tournaments involve slots, poker, or blackjack. Admittedly, winning isn’t exactly easy, but it’s still a possibility worth considering.
Reach a New Level in the Casino Loyalty Program

A much simpler method is to reach a higher tier in the casino’s loyalty program.
As you probably know, most cruise lines have a dedicated casino rewards program, with different perks for each level you achieve.
You earn points by playing, and obviously, the more you play, the greater the rewards. For example, on Royal Caribbean, once you reach Prime status (2,500 points), you receive a complimentary interior stateroom on one cruise each year.
Make Friends with the Casino Staff
I know it might sound a bit odd, but believe me, getting noticed by the casino staff can actually help you score a few extra perks.
If you spot the casino host, make sure you introduce yourself early in the cruise, maybe mention that you’re a regular player and that you really enjoy the casino on that particular ship.
Often, the rewards are personalized, and getting recognized (and showing that you’re spending) can really pay off. Of course, don’t overdo it; the casino staff is used to picking out those who are just trying too hard. It has to feel natural.
Choose “looser” Slots Days

Another tip I’ve been given is to play the slots on the first day. Some people claim that on day one, the odds of winning are higher so they can draw more customers into the casino.
Of course, these are just speculations. As you may know, cruise ships have more flexible rules than traditional casinos, so they could theoretically adjust the odds to suit their needs.
That doesn’t necessarily mean it actually happens, though. We’ll probably never know for sure unless you know someone who works there. Still, if you give it a try, let me know if it’s really easier to win (and rack up points) on the first day.
Understanding the Algorithm
Let’s move on to another easy way to snag a free cruise: getting an offer via email or in the cruise line’s app.
If you’ve ever played in the cruise ship casino, you probably know that after a while, you start receiving offers you can accept, like free drinks in the casino, a complimentary dinner at a specialty restaurant, spa access, onboard credit, booking discounts, and in some cases, even completely free cruises.
So how are these lucky people chosen? That’s the question; nobody really knows the exact algorithm. All we know for sure is that the more you play, the more tempting offers you’re likely to get.
Some believe that it’s not just the total amount of money you spend in the casino but also how long you spend there that leads to better offers. Because of this, a few people suggest betting smaller amounts so you can keep playing for hours without spending too much.
Others think factors like your cabin type, the price you paid for your cruise, the itinerary, and how often you visit the casino all play a central role.
PRO TIP: focus on games with better odds: blackjack, video poker, craps. Winning consistently puts you on the casino’s radar. Flashy wins + frequent play = potential cruise comps.
Sail Off-Season When the Casino Is Quiet

Another thing you should consider is that when fewer people are gambling, your chances of winning tournaments or prize drawings shoot up.
Shoulder seasons or less popular itineraries will give you better odds of scoring the cruise.
Additionally, on less crowded ships, there’s less chance of running into high rollers (or whales) who consistently wager large sums. If they’re not around, you won’t be overshadowed by their spending, which could increase your chances of getting noticed and possibly receiving better offers.
Bring a Wingman (Or Wingwoman) and Combine Play
Another smart thing you can do, if you’re traveling with a partner or friend, is to share a player account to boost your tier status faster.
This thing falls a bit into a gray area, some cruise lines allow it while some others don’t.
On land, many loyalty programs (like Caesars Rewards) let you pool points as a household, but it’s best to ask beforehand to be on the safe side.
Play During Casino Promo Nights

The last piece of advice I’ll give you is to definitely keep an eye out for promotions and special events, because sometimes they can be really worthwhile.
For example, Norwegian occasionally hosts the “Haven Suite Slot Tournament,” where you can win $15,000 plus a suite in The Haven.
Sometimes, they also offer “match play” coupons, which are basically vouchers that match a specific bet. For instance, if you have a $30 match play coupon, you can use it to double that particular wager.
Watch out!
One last important tip: when you sign up for the loyalty program, always make sure to provide the correct email and physical address, and be sure to opt in for promotional emails; otherwise, you risk missing out on these offers.
Also, remember to regularly check any newsletters, app notifications, and even your spam folder.
