10 Things You Should Always Bring on a Cruise Excursion

Cruise excursions are usually one of the best parts of the trip. That is where the real memories happen.

It could be a beach day in the Caribbean, a long walk through some little town in Europe, a boat ride, a food tour, maybe even one of those hot and sticky jungle adventures.

But excursions can also go sideways pretty fast when something basic gets forgotten.

A lot of people step off the ship thinking all they need is a phone and maybe a bit of cash.

But here are 10 things that should pretty much always go on the excursion checklist.

1. A small backpack or day bag (yes also for men)

Small bags

This sounds obvious, but it matters more than people expect.

Trying to do an excursion with pockets full of random stuff is annoying almost immediately.

A small backpack or lightweight day bag makes everything easier. Water bottle, sunscreen, wallet, phone, towel, souvenirs, all of it has somewhere to go.

It’s better if it’s comfortable and not too bulky. Remember that in these cases, something simple works best.

2. A refillable water bottle

This is one of those things people regret forgetting almost right away.

Excursions can be hotter, longer, and more tiring than they look on paper. Even a “short scenic stop” can turn into a lot of walking in full sun.

Having water on hand makes a big difference, especially in the Caribbean, Mexico, or Mediterranean ports in summer.

Buying drinks in port is always possible in some places, but not always when needed. And sometimes it’s overpriced too.

3. Sunscreen

Sunscreen

A cruise excursion can really burn through skin, especially during some parts of the year.

The combination of sun, water, sweat, and being distracted makes it easy to forget how strong the sun actually is.

People get off the ship feeling fine, and by the time they get back on board and realize what’s happened, it’s already too late.

Even on cloudy days, sunscreen is still worth bringing. Especially for beach days, boat tours, ruins, open buses, or anything with very little shade.

4. Your cruise card and a photo ID

These are not exciting to pack, but they are essential.

The cruise card is usually needed to get back on the ship, and in many ports a photo ID is a smart thing to have too.

Some cruise lines recommend carrying both, and it just avoids problems if there is ever any kind of check getting on or off transport or back through the port area.

A lot of people are careful with phones and cash, but weirdly casual with documents. That is a mistake. These should be checked before leaving the cabin, every single time.

5. Cash in small bills

Not every port is card-friendly, and even when cards are accepted, cash still makes life easier.

Small bills are useful for tips, snacks, taxis, local stalls, beach chair rentals, public bathrooms, or quick little purchases that are honestly not worth putting on a card anyway.

It is also just a good backup. Cards can fail when you’re abroad.

No need to carry a huge amount, just enough to cover the basics without stress.

6. A phone or watch with the ship time clearly checked

This one catches people all the time.

On a cruise, ship time and local time are not always the same. That can get messy very fast, especially at ports where the time difference is small enough to confuse people but large enough to make them miss all-aboard.

Before leaving the ship, it helps to double-check what time the ship is using and make sure the phone or watch is set properly, or at least easy to compare.

Getting stranded because of a time mix-up is probably one of the dumbest ways to ruin a cruise, and yet it keeps happening.

7. Comfortable walking shoes

This is one of the biggest excursion mistakes, honestly.

A lot of people dress for photos and not for walking. Then an hour later, they are hobbling over cobblestones in sandals that looked cute for about twelve minutes.

Excursions often involve more walking than expected, especially in these totally walkable cruise ports that don’t need an excursion.

Comfortable shoes matter for city tours, ruins, uneven paths, ports with long piers, markets, scenic viewpoints, basically almost everything.

Even beach excursions can involve a surprising amount of walking before actually getting to the fun part.

PRO TIP: Never wear new shoes on an excursion. Bring a pair that has already molded to your feet and that you know will be comfortable.

8. A towel or something quick-drying

Not every excursion hands out towels, and not every beach day goes exactly as planned.

A compact towel or a quick-drying one is really useful for beach stops, water parks, boat trips, snorkeling tours, or even just unexpectedly getting soaked in a tropical downpour.

Cruise lines sometimes allow pool towels to be taken off the ship, but it’s still smart to know the rules before heading out.

9. Wet wipes or tissues

Wet wipes

This is a small thing that feels unimportant, but it can actually be very useful!

Public restrooms in ports can be unpredictable. Some are perfectly fine. Some are… not great.

Having tissues or wet wipes in the bag is one of those little cruise habits that saves the day more often than anyone wants to admit.

They are also useful for sticky hands, sweaty faces, food spills, sandy feet, melted ice cream, or just freshening up before heading back onboard. Not glamorous, but very worth it.

10. A copy of excursion details or port info

Relying on memory is not always enough, especially on busy port days.

It helps to have the excursion meeting point, departure time, tour company name, and ship contact info saved on the phone or written down somewhere.

If anything changes or something gets confusing in port, having those details ready makes it much easier to sort out.

Also consider that WiFi is not always reliable, so even a screenshot can be a lifesaver. That little bit of preparation can prevent a lot of unnecessary stress later.

Just remember that cruise excursions are supposed to be fun. Of course, choosing the right ones is important too. For example, you should avoid these cruise excursions that can easily ruin your trip.
