I always say that choosing the correct cruise ship can either make your vacation great or ruin it.

With the diverse type of ships by Norwegian Cruise Line, there’s a perfect choice for every type of traveler out there, but (as you already know) not all of them are equal.

Some offer cutting-edge entertainment, spacious cabins, and world-class dining, whereas others have a more outdated design and limited amenities.

For this reason, we’ve created a ranking from least to most favorite, using passenger feedback, experiences on the ship, and total worth.

Keep reading until the end. The ship that takes the top spot might really surprise you!

19. Norwegian Prima

Norwegian Prima

As the name suggests, Norwegian Prima was the first ship in the NCL’s Prima Class. It was launched in 2022 with genuinely high expectations.

Although its modern design, as well as upscale features, impressed many passengers at first, passenger feedback has been somewhat mixed.

Many people love the special features, such as the go-kart track with three levels and the mini-golf, but some others thought the design was not clear and led to overcrowding in some spots, notably near the eating areas and lifts.

In addition, people often complain about the ship’s lack of open areas and dance floors and think its design favored aesthetics over usefulness.

Some entertainment choices have also faced disapproval, along with few activities during the day and a show reservation system that has left some visitors unhappy.

Dining is another source of dispute; there is a wide variety of options. However, quality and availability regarding specialty dining options have been inconsistent.

So in the end, even with its modern appeal, Norwegian Prima certainly has room for improvement, placing it at the bottom in this ranking.

18. Norwegian Dawn

Norwegian Dawn
Norwegian Dawn

Norwegian Dawn, which was launched in 2002 and refurbished in 2016, has been substantially upgraded over time, but many passengers think it’s obviously starting to show its age.

The ship still offers a good cruising experience, along with its many dining places, bars, and recreational facilities, but different people think it’s not among the best ones.

Some guests have reported issues related to the ship’s upkeep. The issues ranged from small concerns within cabins to bigger problems concerning the plumbing and AC.

Entertainment remains a highlight for many of the people, particularly in respect to engaging live shows, but when compared against the rest of the ships throughout the fleet, the variety is somewhat limited.

Even though Norwegian Dawn is still dearly valued by some cruisers (especially those who love the ship’s small and intimate size), some other passengers could feel bored with the ship when compared with the more modern ships in the NCL fleet.

17. Norwegian Star

Norwegian Star
Norwegian Star

Norwegian Star was launched in 2001 and is among the older ships that NCL owns.

Different passengers reported that a certain mechanical problem has been a recurring issue with the ship’s propulsion system, which has resulted in itinerary changes to ports on multiple occasions.

The ship’s age is apparent through many aspects, from quite worn furnishings to rather outdated cabin designs that lack the sleekness of more modern ships.

Some travelers have also found service standards to be fairly inconsistent.

For example, there are reports of quite long delays at the mining dining room and occasional cleanliness issues. Despite these deficiencies, Norwegian Star continues to provide a diverse variety of dining options and good entertainment.

Its prior tech problems and dated design could make it a less attractive choice among NCL ships for those desiring a more polished vacation.

16. Norwegian Epic

Norwegian Epic
Norwegian Epic

Norwegian Epic was introduced in 2010 and showed a prominent change in the way NCL designed cruise ships, offering some interesting new features.

Yet passenger comments throughout the years have shown many problems. A usual critique concentrates on the ships’ quite special room design, notably the restroom arrangement, which certain occupants frequently feel lacks privacy due to its completely strange configuration.

I completely agree, I already said a few years ago that this design is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen on cruise ships.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen these before. They’re those cabins where the living area and bathroom are only separated by a curtain. Here’s a photo below to give you a better idea.

Additionally, although the ship has many places to eat, a few people have said that the food and service are not always reliable, and some passengers talked about long lines at the buffet.

15. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Viva
Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Viva debuted in 2023 and was the second ship within NCL’s Prima Class. The attempt was to blend modern luxury into something new for passengers.

Many visitors appreciate the ship’s updated design, large accommodations, and upscale amenities. However, some guests have raised concerns about additional costs associated with various onboard activities and dining options.

For example, the most popular attractions, like the Speedway go-kart track, come with an extra cost (which is not exactly low).

Additionally, while the ship offers many entertainment options, a number of passengers feel that certain activities cater more toward specific age groups, potentially leaving certain others wanting more tailored experiences.

14. Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway
Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway was launched in 2013 and was acclaimed for its layout, which was quite revolutionary.

Throughout time, passenger feedback has spotlighted many strengths but also weaknesses. In a particularly positive light, many cruisers often liked the energetic nightlife available on the ship, along with a varied selection of restaurant options.

Also, many visitors often talk of the many kid-friendly features.

Still, some tourists bring up issues regarding the ways that crowds are handled, especially during peak times.

Furthermore, because the ship provides many activities onboard, certain amenities, for example, the Aqua Park and also the sports complex, may become extremely congested during peak times or sea days, affecting the traveler’s experience.

13. Norwegian Spirit

Norwegian Spirit
Norwegian Spirit

Norwegian Spirit is one of the older vessels in NCL’s fleet.

Despite a significant $100 million refurbishment in 2020, aimed at modernizing its amenities and design, passenger feedback is still mixed.

Many guests appreciate the ship’s newly updated interiors, along with the new adult-friendly features. However, a few travelers have noted that some parts of the ship still show its age, including lower ceilings in common areas, because it was initially made for Asian customers.

Entertainment options have received mixed reviews as well; while several passengers enjoy the offerings, a few feel they are limited in comparison to larger ships.

In the end, Norwegian Spirit gives a cozier cruise vibe that might be optimal for those who like small ships but may be disappointing for those used to large, new ships.

12. Norwegian Sun

Norwegian Sun
Norwegian Sun

Introduced in 2001, Norwegian Sun is an average-sized ship that has been updated a few times, with the most recent significant refurbishment in 2018.

Since it’s a medium-sized ship, passengers like the relaxed atmosphere, along with the friendly crew, which many say create a more personalized vacation.

The variety of dining options and the ship’s cleanliness are also frequently highlighted positively. However, some guests have reported that certain areas feel dated despite renovations, and the lack of modern amenities found on larger ships can be a drawback for some.

11. Pride of America

Pride of America
Pride of America

Pride of America truly holds a special position within NCL’s fleet as the single major U.S.-flagged cruise ship.

The ship was launched in 2005, and it’s perhaps the best choice if you wanna visit the Hawaiian Islands.

In addition to that, it’s very positive that it has extended port stays to allow passengers to deeply explore the local culture and landscapes.

Although the itinerary receives much praise, the ship has attracted rather varied reviews. Some tourists appreciate the Hawaiian decorations and the simple trips between islands, without needing flights abroad.

However, multiple others have noted that the ship’s age is quite clear in certain areas, that the dining and entertainment options are not very varied and that there are some problems in terms of service quality.

Despite these multiple critiques, Pride of America remains a popular choice among travelers for a nice Hawaiian cruise experience.

10. Norwegian Sky

Norwegian Sky
Norwegian Sky

Norwegian Sky was launched in 1999 (refurbished in 2019) and is one of the smaller ships in NCL’s fleet, accommodating just over 2,000 passengers.

This ship is frequently picked out for short trips, such as 3- to 5-night voyages within the Caribbean and within the Bahamas.

Many passengers loved the incredibly cozy setting and exceptionally kind staff.

The 2019 refurbishment updated the inside decorations and added some new venues, such as La Cucina, a specialty Italian restaurant, and The Local Bar & Grill. This greatly improved the dining options.

Like most of the previous ships, despite the refurbishments, the ship’s age is still quite visible in some places, in particular in the cabins, which are somewhat smaller than the new ships.

Despite this, as mentioned earlier, several passengers think Norwegian Sky is a good choice for a short cruise.

9. Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian Getaway
Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian Getaway entered the fleet in 2014. It’s a relatively large, modern ship designed to provide a wide array of entertainment and dining options.

Consider that it has 20 dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Ocean Blue and Cagney’s Steakhouse.

Entertainment is also quite praised with Broadway-caliber shows such as “Million Dollar Quartet,” a nice nightlife scene, and a sports complex that has a ropes course, climbing wall, and zip line.

Passengers also loved the outdoor promenade called “The Waterfront” where you can find bars and restaurants with a beautiful sea view.

Generally speaking, Norwegian Getaway is for travelers who are looking for a fun environment with quite a wide range of dining and entertainment choices.

8. Norwegian Gem

Norwegian Gem
Norwegian Gem

Norwegian Gem was launched in 2007 and is a Jewel-class ship that offers a good balance between size and amenities.

It can accommodate about 2,400 passengers, and the ship’s layout is often appreciated because it’s easy to navigate and relatively smaller compared to newer mega-ships.

However, some passengers have said that certain areas of the ship are starting to show signs of age, and the range of onboard activities is more limited than on larger ships.

Even with these minor issues, Norwegian Gem continues to be a popular choice for cruisers seeking a mid-sized ship with a welcoming atmosphere and a good mix of amenities.

7. Norwegian Encore

Norwegian Encore
Norwegian Encore

Norwegian Encore was launched in 2019 and is the final ship in NCL’s Breakaway Plus class.

In the reviews, passengers frequently praise the ship’s diverse dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and Le Bistro, which offer a high-quality culinary experience.

The ship also features some truly special things, for example, a go-kart track boasting two levels, as well as an outdoor laser tag area.

Still, some visitors stated that these very popular activities often require prior booking, that it is sometimes difficult to find a free spot, and that the prices are quite high.

Additionally, with a capacity of almost 4,000 passengers, several areas across the ship, such as the pool deck and the buffet, might become crowded during peak times, leading to lengthier wait times and lower availability of seating.

6. Norwegian Joy

Norwegian Joy
Norwegian Joy

Norwegian Joy was introduced in 2017 and was originally designed for the Chinese market.

It underwent significant renovations in 2019 to cater to North American cruisers. For example, in the beginning, Norwegian Joy had larger retail and casinos, smaller gyms and spas, and tea rooms instead of bars.

As you can imagine, now it features a wide variety of dining options, with some particularly diverse culinary experiences at restaurants like Teppanyaki and Q Texas Smokehouse.

In terms of the negative aspects, some passengers have reported that certain amenities, like the main pool area, feel undersized according to the ship’s capacity, leading to congestion during sea days.

Also, even if the ship providing a broad number of activities, some guests think that the layout is a bit confusing and it’s a bit of a challenge to navigate among venues.

5. Norwegian Jade

Norwegian Jade
Norwegian Jade

Norwegian Jade was launched in 2006 and is part of NCL’s Jewel-class ships.

Passengers usually like the ship’s elegant design and the crew. I’ve personally recently talked to a passenger that said that the the staff was sensational.

In addition, many reviews underlined a good level of entertainment between live music, theatrical productions, and themed parties, which make the ship fun for all guests.

The ship’s smaller size, accommodating around 2,400 passengers, allows for a more intimate atmosphere and personalized service.

Overall, Norwegian Jade is (and could still be) a favorite among cruisers seeking a classic cruising experience with a touch of modern flair.

4. Norwegian Pearl

Norwegian Pearl
Norwegian Pearl

Norwegian Pearl was launched in 2006 and is a Jewel-class ship.

Passengers often love the ship’s very imaginative decor, with jewel-tone carpeting as well as truly special design elements that carefully contribute to its particular ambiance.

The ships offer both many diverse dining venues and an interesting type of entertainment.

In particular, Norwegian Pearl often sails for theme cruises, for example, music-focused trips. A while back, I also told you about the cruise where only the crew would be dressed, and that is on Norwegian Pearl.

However, some travelers have noted that certain cabins, especially those located on decks 5, 8, and 11, may experience noise. To avoid these kinds of problems, I recommend you take a look at the article on the cabins to avoid on Norwegian ships.

3. Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian cruise
Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Bliss was launched in 2018, it’s a Breakaway Plus-class ship, and passengers really love its refined design and array of modern amenities.

One of its most noticeable features is the large Observation Lounge, a 20,000 square-foot area offering wide-ranging sights, making it very popular during Alaska trips.

In addition, the ships has about 27 food venues, including a casual self-service area, a French bistro, and Ocean Blue catering to seafood lovers.

Passengers also loved the shows and entertainment, but as always happens with larger ships, a few guests have reported that frequently visited areas can become packed.

2. Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Escape
Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Escape was launched in 2015, and like the previous ship is part of the Breakaway Plus-class.

This ship has garnered positive reviews for its extensive amenities. Passengers often highlight the ship’s diverse dining options, which include specialty restaurants like Bayamo by Ocean Blue and Cagney’s Steakhouse. And also The Waterfront, which allows guests to enjoy ocean views while dining or relaxing.

Cruisers also like the vibrant nightlife on this ship. Many reviews talked about venues like The District Brew House, known for its extensive selection of craft beers.

As usual, the negative reviews focus on the crowdedness that certain areas can reach during popular activities or peak times, but as we’ve learned, this happens on pretty much every large ship of every cruise line.

1. Norwegian Jewel

Norwegian Jewel

Norwegian Jewel was launched in 2005 and is the namesake among NCL’s Jewel-class ships.

Over the years, it has consistently gotten positive reviews from passengers and critics alike, and following refurbishment in late 2018, the ship also has modernized cabins, refreshed public spaces, and updated dining venues.

Frequently, visitors praise the boat’s quite cozy setting, which is rather preferable among the fleet’s bigger and more packed ships. Consider that Norwegian Jewel can accommodate around 2,376 people, so it provides a more intimate cruise.

The dining options are quite diverse and cater well to many culinary preferences. Visitors can choose between French cuisine at Le Bistro and Italian dishes at La Cucina. Additional venues were also added like The Pit Stop, a 1950s-style bar with views of the pool..

I have also read very positive things about the entertainment, with the Stardust Theater that hosts a variety of shows, such as aerial acts and magic performances.

Speaking of accommodations, the choices range from cozy inside cabins to the luxurious Haven suites. This provides options for different budgets and preferences. We discussed this in more detail in the article on the 7 things Norwegian does better than any other cruise line

The truth is that Norwegian Jewel might lack some of the fancier attractions available on newer ships, such as rock-climbing walls or the go-kart track, but it compensates with its pleasant ambiance and outstanding service.

This mix has brought Norwegian Jewel to the top of the list, making it well-liked by both experienced and new cruise passengers.

Obviously, opinions can change. For example, the itinerary plays a crucial role, which is why I recommend checking out the list of the 10 Best and Worst Cruise Ports of 2025.
