We all make mistakes; it’s the nature of human beings.
The problem is that sometimes these mistakes can cost us a lot of money, especially if we are planning a cruise vacation.
That is why it is always important to be very careful, even about small details, to avoid ending up in unpleasant situations.
In this article, I’ll share some tips on what to check and what to pay attention to so you can avoid wasting money.
1. Not Researching Shore Excursions
Shore excursions are among the most expensive things on a cruise, so it is important to do some research before booking.
Remember to evaluate prices well between those offered directly by the cruise lines and those offered by local operators.
In some ports, it may not be necessary to book an excursion, especially in very small towns that can be visited on foot.
2. Ignoring Drink Packages
Another big expense on a cruise is definitely the drinks.
Before you set sail, think about how many drinks you might have each day and decide if a drink package is worth it for you.
They are usually worth it only if you drink a lot of alcoholic beverages.
3. Overpacking
Another very common mistake is overpacking, I’ve even mentioned it among the mistakes that even seasoned cruise passengers make.
Many people caught up in the euphoria of travel pack anything and everything, without considering that space in the cabin is limited and that many clothes will probably return home without even being used.
Usually, the best thing to do is to stick to versatile pieces that you can mix and match. Don’t be afraid of not having enough clean clothes. Many cruise lines have laundromats on each deck, and the laundry service is not that expensive.
4. Take Advantage of Free Dining Options
On cruise ships, there are different specialty restaurants but they cost extra money.
I know that they can be attractive and offer special menus, but in most cases, you can easily avoid them if you want to save money.
As you probably know, there are already many good and free options that include restaurants, buffets, and cafes, where you can eat a lot of different food.
5. Ignoring the Daily Planner
The daily planner should be your guide while you’re on the ship.
On it, you’ll find all the activities, the events, the shows and the schedules. In addition, you will find some special promotions that could save you a lot of money.
Read it carefully and remember to look at the last page, which is usually the one that lists services that are discounted for that day.
6. Buying Souvenirs at Ports
Everyone loves souvenirs, they are a perfect way to take home a vacation memory.
However, be careful where you buy them. Souvenirs can be overpriced at port shops, and it’s usually better to buy them in less touristy areas.
In addition, be careful of tourist prices. Some vendors may ask you for a higher price if they see that you are a tourist, and in some places, it is customary to haggle for a lower price.
7. Not Booking in Advance
When traveling on a cruise, you should always book in advance; it’s the only technique to save a lot of money.
In short, you should book the cruise at least a year in advance and the extra activities and services always before you board.
For excursions, I recommend GetYourGuide. It’s cheaper than other services and absolutely reliable—I’ve used it many times before. You can even get 10% off if you click here.

8. Skipping Travel Insurance
A lot of passengers do not add travel insurance to their cruise. Everyone thinks “nothing will happen to me” but I assure you that unforeseen events can happen to anyone and they happen when you least expect it.
Unfortunately, I know something about it, as it happened to me, and since then I always add cruise-specific insurance. I pay a little more, but at least I am protected for the whole trip.
If you don’t know how to choose it check this guide.
9. Using the Internet Without a Specific Plan
When you are at sea, an internet connection can be very expensive, especially if your smartphone connects to the satellite network.
To avoid unexpected charges, you can set your smartphone to airplane mode or buy a specific plan.
I recommend the cruise-specific eSIM plans from Gigsky. They are very easy to use, just download the app, activate the plan, and you’ll have coverage on more than 200 ships and in several countries, including the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe.
You can also use the code “CRUISEWITHLEO” to get a 10% discount on cruise plans.
10. Choosing a Cabin That is Too Expensive
Over the years, I have noticed that many people make this mistake, and I want to warn you.
When you book, choose the cabin category that best fits your budget. Many people choose the balcony cabin and then don’t have the money to actually enjoy the cruise.
Sometimes the inside cabin may be the right choice for you. Look at the 7 reasons why an inside cabin is the best choice on a cruise.
11. Ignoring Promotions
Cruise lines often run promotions for discounts on future bookings, onboard credits, or free perks. Don’t miss out!
Sometimes they are difficult to spot. They are most common during the holiday season and during Black Friday.

12. Underestimating Tipping Costs
Automatic gratuities can add up and can be a significant expense, especially for large families.
If you want to, you can look at the guide on how to remove gratuities on Royal Caribbean.
In addition, bring some extra cash for additional tips for exceptional service. There is no need to exaggerate though, here’s how much extra you should tip cruise staff.
13. Not Packing Snacks
While food is plentiful on cruise ships, having snacks for excursions or late-night cravings can save you from purchasing overpriced snacks onboard.
I want to remind you of one important thing, only packaged snacks are allowed on board.
Processed or cooked food is not allowed for food safety protocols.
14. Buying Overpriced Things
In the eyes of an inexperienced cruiser, cruises seem like vacations where you pay an initial price and then have everything included.
It’s not like that. Over the years, cruise lines have become increasingly good at selling you extras for additional money.
To avoid these mistakes remember to check the list of overpriced things you can find on cruise ships and the list of things you should never buy on a cruise.
15. Not Using Loyalty Programs
Loyalty programs are essential if you want to save money.
I recommend signing up as soon as possible, even if you have children so that they are already at a high status when they grow up.
Consider that some loyalty programs offer various benefits and even discounts on cruise booking. For example, MSC immediately gives you a 5% discount all year round.
16. Forgetting to Bring Essential Items
Buying essentials like sunscreen, medications, or toiletries onboard can be much more expensive. Always pack what you need or buy them in the stores when you get off the ship.
In order not to forget some essential things you can check the list of 20 cruise essentials that I always bring on a cruise.
17. Not Taking Advantage of the Free Drinks
Not everyone knows that there are several free drinks on cruise ships. You can usually find them at the buffet, but also in some other areas of the ship.
If you are not sure what I am talking about you can check out these 10 drinks that are always free on a cruise and also my guide on how you can get a free drink or cocktail.
