Texas Is Getting a Major New Cruise Ship. Here’s What’s Coming

Texas cruisers are getting another big one.

Carnival Cruise Line has announced that Carnival Tropicale will homeport in Galveston, Texas.

And this is not just some little schedule shuffle. This is Carnival’s fifth Excel-class ship, which means Galveston is getting one of the newest and largest ships in the fleet.

For anyone who has been watching Galveston grow as a cruise port, this feels like a pretty big deal.

Carnival has been leaning hard into Texas for years, and now the port will have Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Tropicale sailing from there.

That means Galveston will be home to two of Carnival’s newest Excel-class ships. Not bad at all for a port that, years ago, some people still treated like a secondary cruise option.

Carnival Tropicale Is Coming To Galveston

Carnival Tropicale is scheduled to start sailing from Galveston in 2028.

The ship is named after the original MS Tropicale, which entered service back in 1982 and is remembered as one of the early ships that helped shape Carnival’s “Fun Ship” style.

So the company is bringing back a name that longtime cruise fans may actually recognize.

But the new Tropicale will be very different from the old one, obviously.

This ship will be part of Carnival’s Excel class, the same family as Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee, and Carnival Festivale.

These ships are large, loud in a fun way, packed with food venues, entertainment, bars, family areas, and all the bells and whistles Carnival loves to put on its newest ships.

What Will Be On Board?

Carnival has not revealed every single detail yet, but the line has already shared one big feature: Sunsation Point.

This will be a top deck area designed for fun during the day and at night.

It will include Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, with six waterslides and two splash pads, plus mini golf, outdoor games, an arcade, and dining spots.

That already sounds like a very Carnival kind of space.

Just make sure you know the 7 smart strategies to beat chair hogs on cruise ships.

The ship is also expected to include popular Excel class favorites, although Carnival has said more details will be revealed later.

So for now, you can expect a big new ship with plenty of food, entertainment, outdoor spaces, family-friendly attractions, and probably a few surprises Carnival is saving for later.

Galveston Keeps Getting Bigger

This announcement says a lot about where Galveston stands now.

For years, Florida ports got most of the attention when it came to the biggest and flashiest cruise ships. Miami, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale. The usual names.

But Galveston has become a serious player.

Carnival Jubilee already gave Texas a brand new Excel-class ship when it launched service from Galveston in 2024. Now Tropicale will add another one in 2028.

That is huge for cruisers in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and even farther inland.

Not everyone wants to fly to Florida to take a cruise.

Sometimes the best cruise is the one where the drive to the port is manageable, and there is no airport chaos before vacation even starts.

And honestly, Galveston has that advantage, and that matters more than people admit.

If, on the other hand, you’re staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, make sure you avoid these very common mistakes.

Itineraries Are Still A Mystery

One thing Carnival has not announced yet is the actual itinerary lineup for Carnival Tropicale.

So far, the big news is the ship and the homeport. The destinations will come later.

That said, Galveston cruises usually lean heavily toward the Western Caribbean. Places like Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize, and other warm-weather favorites.

Anyway, this will take some time. For now, take a look at the current ranking of Carnival Cruise Line ships and the new Africa cruises they’ve announced.
