Here we are with another article focused on the types of cabins you can find on cruise ships.
This time we will talk specifically about exterior cabins with a window—a type that often gets underestimated and overlooked.
Ocean-view cabins are typically found in limited numbers on cruise ships, located on the lowest decks where balconies aren’t feasible due to safety reasons
Although the windows in these cabins can’t usually be opened (again, for safety reasons), they still offer some significant advantages. Let’s explore what makes them a great option.
1. Cost-Effective
You probably know this: inside cabins are the cheapest option on a cruise ship, followed by window cabins and then balcony cabins.
Window cabins offer a great middle ground, providing both comfort and value for those who want something a bit more luxurious than an inside cabin but without the higher cost of a balcony.
On average, ocean-view cabins cost about 20% to 50% more than inside cabins but 30% to 75% less than balcony cabins.
Prices can fluctuate based on various factors. For example, on my last cruise, the inside cabin was $1,100, the ocean view was $1,350, and the balcony cabin was $1,980.
This gives you a practical idea of how these price differences play out in real scenarios.
2. Space
Window cabins can be a bit larger than inside cabins, but it’s always a good idea to check the specific dimensions before booking.
Even when the square footage is the same, having a window can make the room feel much more spacious and open compared to a completely enclosed inside cabin.
The natural light and view provided by the window can create a more comfortable and airy atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience of your stay.
3. Natural Light
It’s undeniable that one of the biggest perks of an ocean-view cabin is the presence of a window.
As we’ve already seen it can make the room feel more spacious, open, and less claustrophobic compared to inside cabins.
It’s also perfect for those who can’t live without natural light. Some people don’t enjoy complete darkness and love waking up to the gentle sunlight streaming in.
4. Reduction of Seasickness
Another reason why the window cabin may be best for you is related to seasickness.
Generally, being able to see the horizon helps stabilize your senses and can reduce the likelihood of feeling queasy.
In addition, ocean-view cabins are located on lower decks that are less prone to wave movements. For more information on the decks, you can check the article where we’ve seen which deck is the best one on a cruise ship.
5. Quieter and More Private
Compared to balcony cabins, window cabins tend to be quieter and more private.
From the balcony, you can often hear external noises, people playing, music from the pool deck, or your cabin neighbors chatting on the balcony.
If you prefer a peaceful environment, the cruise ship window is the perfect thing for you.
6. Unique Scenic Experiences
I know that inside cabins are very cheap, I have also pointed this out several times in the article where I explained why an inside cabin might be the right choice for you.
However, the biggest problem with inside cabins is that you cannot enjoy the outside view during your trip.
With external cabins, you might witness unique scenes like marine life, passing ships, or beautiful sunsets right from your window. These unexpected sights can make your cruise experience definitely more memorable.
7. More chances to have a balcony upgrade
Upgrades on cruises, especially during off-peak periods, are quite frequent.
Typically, upgrades move you from one category to the next, making it unlikely to jump multiple levels in one go.
For this reason, an ocean-view cabin gives you a much better chance of getting a balcony cabin. And I will tell you more, it also gives you the opportunity to get a suite.
A few years ago, I booked a window cabin, and when I received my tickets, I was thrilled to discover I had been upgraded to a junior suite. It was such a pleasant surprise!
Obviously, I had followed these tips to be able to get a free upgrade on the cruise.
To Sum Up
As I have said many times, all types of cabins have their pros and cons.
Try to choose the cabin that best suits your preferences, without underestimating the budget, which in the end is the key thing to consider.
All cabins are designed to be comfortable; so the key is to avoid locations that are less desirable.
